How to get to Maribor
Maribor is located in the northeast of Slovenia. The distance from Slovenia's capital Ljubljana is approximately 130 kilometers or a 1½-hour drive. This is also roughly the distance from the country’s main international airport, the Jože Pučnik International Airport, at Brnik.
By plane
Ljubljana
Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport is the only airport in Slovenia with regular international service. The airport is located some 25 kilometers north of Ljubljana. It serves most major European cities and airports. There are regular hourly bus transfers (45 mins) from the airport to Ljubljana. A one-way ticket from the airport to Ljubljana costs around 4€. For transfers to and from the airport to Ljubljana you can also use taxis, which cost approximately 25€one way.
The cheapest way to get from Ljubljana to Maribor is by train. Daily train services are available from 5 am to 11 pm and will cost you some 20+€one way. The train schedule is available here.
Graz
Graz Airport in the neighboring Austria is some 40 kilometers from Maribor. It is Maribor's nearest international airport. It offers regular and frequent flights to several major European airport hubs (Munich, Frankfurt, Vienna, Berlin, London, etc.).
The easiest and cheapest way to reach Maribor from Graz Airport is by train. The train station (Flughafen Graz-Feldkirchen) is within walking distance of the arrivals terminal. Take the railway line south to Maribor and change the train at the last station (Spielfeld-Strass) before the Slovenian border or call a taxi to take you to Maribor (some 25-30€) . International trains from Vienna to Ljubljana or Zagreb will take you to Maribor without the change at the border, but they depart from Graz Hauptbahnhof, which is located in the center of Graz. A one-way ticket from the airport to Maribor costs approximately 15€.
Alternatively, you can also take a taxi, which is available at the front of the airport terminal building. The transfer from Graz Airport to Maribor will cost you around 55€.
Vienna
Vienna Schwechat International Airport is a 2½-hour drive from Maribor. It is the main international airport in the region and offers connections to virtually all parts of the world. The easiest way to get from Vienna to Maribor is by train. The journey takes between 3½–4 hours and costs approximately 55€(one way).
Zagreb
The Franjo Tuđman Airport Zagreb is a 1½-hour drive from Maribor. It serves most main European cities and airports. There is a train connection between Zagreb and Maribor. The journey takes between 2½–3 hours and costs approximately 15€. (Transfer by bus from Zagreb Airport to the main bus station in Zagreb requires an additional 30 minutes and costs approximately 4€.)
Klagenfurt
Klagenfurt Airport is a 2-hour drive from Maribor. In addition to Austrian domestic flights, it mostly serves German airports (Frankfurt, Hannover, etc.). The best way to get to Maribor from Klagenfurt is by train. Even though the distance is not great, the journey takes approximately 4 hours because of changes. A one-way train ticket to Maribor costs approximately 45€.

If you will be taking the train to Maribor from the directions of either Ljubljana or Zagreb, you should check with the conductor whether you have to change the train at the 'Zidani most’ junction. With some trains, that will not be necessary; however, it is better to check so as to avoid going in the wrong direction and losing time.
